The Web Way to Learn a Language

The young woman seated next to us at the restaurant had an exotic (异国的) air; her looks and style, we thought, made it likely that she was not American born. But then she spoke in perfect American English, even ending her sentences in a way many young Californians do. As it turns out, however, she wasn't from these parts after all; she was born in Iran and spoke only Persian until her arrival here two years ago. How, we wondered, had she learned English so well? "I used Rosetta Stone," she said. The yellow box sold in shops is an example of PC-based language learning, but it certainly isn't the only one.

With the growth of broadband networks, companies have introduced a wide range of Internet-based language learning products, both free and fee-based, that allow students to interact in real time with teachers in other countries, gain access to their lesson plans wherever they are in the world, and communicate with virtual pen pals. Learning a language sometimes seems as difficult as dieting. The solution is to figure out how to stay interested after the novelty wears off. Online language programs have introduced crossword puzzles, interactive videos and other games to reward users for making progress.

How do you choose which program to use? "Sites with human contact work best," a language professor in Australia said. "It shows the advantage of humans compared to computers."

One of Rosetta Stone's main competitors, Tell Me More (tellmemore.com) believes it has an advantage because its software not only teaches words and phrases, but includes videos showing students how to shape their mouths to create different sounds. The British Broadcasting Corporation (bbc.com) offers varying levels of instruction for 36 languages, with features including audio and video playback and translation. Besides, simpler versions of these programs may be used on smart phones and other digital devices.

All these represent a new trend in the web way of learning languages. Make use of one or more of these new programs and you will learn languages more effectively.

36、Which of the following statements is true about the young woman seated next to us at the restaurant? ______

A.She could speak American English as well as a young Californian.

B.Her looks and style showed that she was a native American.

C.She was actually from California.

D.She could not speak Persian.

37、What are Rosetta Stone and Tell Me More? ______

A.They are training courses on smart phones.

B.They are network companies.

C.They are branches of the British Broadcasting Corporation.

D.They are Internet-based language learning products.

38、Which of the following is NOT true about Internet-based language learning products? ______

A.They allow students to interact in real time with teachers all over the world.

B.They are all free.

C.Some of them are fee-based.

D.They allow students to communicate with virtual pen pals.

39、What online language programs have been introduced to attract the Internet users and help users make progress? ______

A.Crossword puzzles.                    B.Interactive videos.

C.Other games.                         D.All above.

40、According to a language professor in Australia, which program do you choose to use for online learning? ______

College Students are Seeking Out Plastic Surgery

Surveys show alarming trends among the youth of today, who appear to be extremely eager to get under the knife to change their looks. For many young men and women, barely out of their teens, it would appear that plastic surgery has become the panacea (万能药) for their dissatisfaction with their looks.

Also, opposite to popular belief, it is not only the youth in America who are lining up at the clinics of plastic surgeons to improve their image of themselves. This change has now spread to Korea with students in their 20's choosing cosmetic and plastic surgery to beautify their looks.

In the United Kingdom, this great need for cosmetic and plastic surgery is also on the rise among the youth. A British association of plastic surgeons reported that the number of surgical operations has greatly increased. Furthermore, medical tourism in regards to cosmetic surgery is on the rise today in the UK with cosmetic surgery centers and plastic surgery clinics offering discounts and attractive packages.

Glamour and beauty have become the order of the day and today's youth regard pop stars, actors and celebrities (名人) as their role models. It has become a priority for people to have a beautiful face and a beautiful body, in order for them to fit in with social groups, and as a result, students and young people are under a lot of pressure to look good.

Ordinary faces have disappeared from magazines, television and even newspapers and it is only the beautiful pictures of rail-thin models, with pouting (噘嘴的) lips and sculpted bodies that appear on billboard. Images of these carefully selected beautiful people and the attention being given to looks today have caused many young people to grow up with a sense of inferiority.

It is sad to see the 20-year-old so eager to try out dangerous surgeries where they will allow their faces to be cut in an attempt to become what they feel is "beautiful". As kids they are not happy with themselves and when they grow up and go to college and are of age—they choose plastic surgery as a solution to their low self-esteem.

43、The models who appear on billboards usually have the following characteristics EXCEPT ______.

A.rail-thin bodies                       B.round faces

C.pouting lips                           D.sculpted bodies

Out with the Old—Seven New Wonders of the World

A. Forget the Pyranaids. Seven new wonders of the world were announced in Lisbon, Portugal, fittingly, on Saturday July 7, 2007. For longer than two years, and with more than 100 million votes from Internet polls and text messages, just about anyone with an Internet connection could vote on the new seven wonders.

B. The origin of the idea of "seven wonders of the world" dates back to Herodotus (484 B.C.-425 B.C.) and Callimachus (305 B.C.-240 B.C.), who made lists which included the Great Pyramid of Babylon, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Mausoleum of Mausolus at Haliicamassus, Colossus of Rhodes and Lighthouse of Alexandria.

C. Founder of the organization New 7 Wonders, Bernard Weber, came up with the idea of naming seven new wonders in an effort to raise money to reconstruct the giant statues of Buddha in Afghanistan, which were destroyed by the Taliban.

D. The newly elected wonders of the world include the following architectural landmarks: the Great Wall of China, the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, the hidden city of Machu Picchu in Peru, Jordan's Petra, the Taj Mahal in India, Mexico's Chichen Itza Pyramid and the Colosseum in Rome. Other nominees included the Statue of Liberty, Easter Island, the Eiffel Tower, and Stonehenge, but all came up short in the votes. "The people of the world have created global memory—seven things that everyone will remember," said Weber. Surprisingly, none of the new wonders is in the North America, while nearly half of them are located in Latin America.

E. So what about the pyramids? The Pyramids of Giza is the only remaining wonder of the original 7 wonders of the ancient world. The other ancient wonders have fallen victim to earthquakes and arson (纵火). The Egyptians were rumored to be outraged (气愤的) that the pyramids didn't earn a spot on the list. "Monuments do not have to parade on a podium like in a beauty contest," said Greek Culture Minister George Voulgarakis. "The competition has nothing to do with the true value of monuments," he added. The pyramids will not lose its position as a world wonder, in addition to the new seven.

F. There were many others that questioned the credibility of the poll. The results undoubtedly left out the votes and opinions of the people in parts of the world without an Internet connection.

G. The United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has taken a strong stance (态度) against the vote. Christian Nanhar, a press officer of UNESCO, an organization that names historical and world heritage sites, voiced his discontent over the voting: "All of these wonders obviously deserve a place on the list, but what disturbs us is that the list is limited to just seven."

[H] Nevertheless, the new seven wonders have gotten much praise around the globe. The new list has given citizens of these countries a new sense of pride in their landmarks and will most likely see a rise in tourists flocking to see these world wonders.

51、The other wonders of the ancient world were destroyed by earthquakes, fire or other reasons except the Pyramids of Giza.

52、People had their votes through the Internet to elect new seven wonders.

53、The result of the election of new seven wonders will encourage tourists from all over the world to see those landmarks.

54、The purpose of the election is to raise money to reconstruct the giant statues of Buddha destroyed by the Taliban.
