Part Ⅲ Reading Comprehension

Directions: After reading each passage, you will find five questions. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should choose the best choice.

Task 1

How to Help Kids Grow?

All parents have sky-high hopes for their children. We want them to be confident and content. What can parents do to help their kids grow up to lead happy and productive lives? Experts advise:

1. Helping them find their talents. In order to succeed, children need to feel they're good at something. So expose your children to as many interests as possible; then let them choose those they like best!

2. Applauding their accomplishments. A study found that students whose parents fussed over their abilities were far more likely to do well in school—and in life—than students whose parents didn't show such support. So celebrate your kids' achievements, no matter how small they are.

3. Giving them responsibilities. Responsibilities help youngsters grow into mature and self-motivated adults. So assign your children household chores when they are young. Four-year-olds can pitch in by picking up their dirty clothes and helping to set the table.

4. Letting them make decisions and mistakes. Making their own decisions increases a child's self-control and boosts their self-esteem. And allowing kids to make wrong decisions—as long as doing so won't harm them—helps kids learn from their mistakes.

5. Encouraging them to solve their own problems. As they grow, children need practice in communicating, standing up for themselves and compromising. One of the best places to learn these skills is at home. So the next time your child runs to you complaining that her brother picks on her, step back and let them work it out.

41、 What should parents do so that their children are likely to do well in school?______

Task 2

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard(果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though they worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.

One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals and other projects began to be built in our village. "Who are they?" I asked. "They are good men from our government," my grandma replied.

Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.

One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn't have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed a policy(政策) was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.

Thank those good men who have devoted themselves to the development of our countryside. Nowadays, people work hard to live in a big city. However, we should not forget our hometowns where we are from.

Task 3

If you have to describe yourself to someone else, what will you say? It can be difficult to see yourself from the outside, but knowing who you are, namely self-awareness, can help you understand feelings and make friendships closer.

Self-awareness means having a good understanding of our own character, that is, having the ability to see ourselves clearly. If you're self-aware, you may know that you love playing an instrument because you do well in it, and music makes you happy, or that you prefer watching TV on your own because it helps you relax.

Knowing what you like and dislike, what you do well in and what you find difficult allows you to make better decisions about friendships, schoolwork and so on. You learn to trust your own feelings more, which builds confidence. The World Health Organization says self-awareness is one of ten important life skills that help young people live happier, healthier lives. Being self-aware doesn't mean only thinking of yourself. By understanding your own feelings, you will better understand other people too.

How do you learn to be self-aware? It's a good way to ask questions. But ask yourself questions that start with "What" instead of "Why". So if you don't understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you're arguing.

Learning to be more self-aware is a skill, which means you learn it as you grow. So be bold and try out new things, like playing a new sport or listening to different kinds of music. Don't be afraid to dislike something—discovering what you find difficult is a key part of learning more about yourself.

51、 What is the second paragraph mainly about?______

A.What self-awareness is.

B.What true happiness is.

C.How to find true happiness.

D.How to develop self-awareness.

52、 Knowing yourself is important because ______.

A.it'll make you think more of yourself

B.it'll make you perform better at school

C.it'll help you learn how to ask proper questions

D.it'll help you have a better understanding of others

53、 What does the underlined word "bold" in the last paragraph probably mean in Chinese?______

A.努力的     B.自豪的       C.大胆的       D.耐心的

54、 What's one of the keys to becoming more self-aware?______

A.Being in high spirits.

B.Discovering your weak points.

C.Having a taste for pleasant music.

D.Learning to get along well with others.

55、 Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?______

A.It can be hard for you to know yourself well from others.

B.It takes a lot of time and energy to develop close friendships.

C.It is important and necessary for you to make a right decision.

D.It is a must to stick to your opinions when arguing with others.

Task 4

Eating Out

It would be interesting to know what Americans eat at home, but the information probably would not tell us very much. The population of the country is so varied and there are such different traditions in different parts of the world that we would probably find in the country a mixture of diets found everywhere else in the world. Where U.S. eating habits have changed, however, and where they have become very similar, is in what happens when people go outside their homes to eat. A recent survey tells us a lot about the restaurant eating habits of Americans.

The people of the United States eat out often. In an average month, 98 percent of U. S. families eat at least one meal in some kind of restaurant, and most families eat out over nine times a week. Although not all of the meals they eat out are regular meals—breakfast, lunch, or dinner—that means that people eat over one-third of their meals in restaurants. Can you guess which meal they eat out most often? Not surprisingly, it is lunch. The following list shows how often different meals are eaten in a restaurant:

图片2

Where Americans eat is a second interesting question. A real symbol of modem life in the United States is the fast food restaurant—that is, a restaurant where there is usually no service at the table, where you pick up your food yourself, sometimes in a car from an outside window, and where the food is often already prepared before you get there. The most popular kind of fast food is the hamburger, and the most popular type of restaurant is the fast food hamburger restaurant.

A third question is why Americans go out to eat. The answers to this question depend on what kind of restaurant they choose. The fast food restaurant seems to have replaced a lot of home meals, and people eat at them for convenience. Most Americans say that they eat out in fast food restaurants in order to avoid having to cook. Another reason is that they can eat quickly. Although there are still a lot of full-service restaurants, people go to them mostly to celebrate special occasions, such as birthdays and anniversaries, and simply to relax. The relaxing experience makes full-service restaurants very different from fast food restaurants, where eating fast food is just that fast.

The United States is certainly a restaurant society, but we may ask whether the restaurants are actually that good or whether eating in them is healthy. They must be good because they are very popular, but a look at the food that people order shows that fried foods and soft drinks are their greatest preference. Since we know that too much fat and sugar is not healthy, it appears that Americans would rather eat their fast food than be healthy.

56、 People in the United States ______.

A.have different traditions

B.have similar eating habits

C.always eat at home

D.always eat in restaurants

57、 Nearly all the people of the United States eat out ______.

A.once a week

B.once a month

C.nine times a week

D.nine times a month

58、 In a fast food restaurant you can ______.

A.call a waiter to serve you

B.buy your food from an outside window

C.make a reservation one day earlier

D.enjoy service at any time

59、 What's the main reason for Americans to go out to eat?______

A.They can meet with many friends.

B.They can have cheaper food there.

C.They can save time by not cooking.

D.They can avoid washing dishes after the meal.

60、 Which of the following statements is TRUE?______

A.Americans like to eat healthy food in a restaurant.

B.Americans find fast food more delicious.

C.Fried foods and soft drinks are Americans' favorite foods.

D.Fast food is both healthy and convenient.

Task 5

According to research, more than 130 billion pounds of uneaten food go to waste in Laura's country each year. That is about 30% of the yearly food supply (供应). It is a sad fact, especially when you consider how many families and homeless people are in hunger.

When Laura saw her school dining hall throw away food that was not eaten at all every day, she came up with an idea. She started a project to help her school dining hall to give away uneaten food to homeless shelters (庇护所) in her community. In the past three years, the same project has spread to other schools and some fast food restaurants throughout the city. The project is called Feed & Find, and has already fed thousands of people in her city.

How does it work? Through an app, Feed & Find matches local homeless shelters with school dining halls and restaurants that have uneaten food to provide. When dining halls or restaurants have uneaten food left, they can use the app to share the information about the food. A truck driver working for the project is then sent to pick it up and take it to a shelter.

Pretty cool, right7 It's not surprising that people in other cities have got in touch with Laura, hoping that she could help develop similar projects for their communities.

Some people, however, have concerns about the safety of the uneaten food. They think such food may not be clean enough. Still, this project is a clever way to help solve the problem of food waste and it helps those in need.
