Every time I look at my parents or even think of them, pride fills me. My life and world is all thanks to them. I especially admire their determination during our struggle coming to America.

Our native country was Vietnam, hut for some reason, we had to leave our home and all our belongings and go on a long boat journey to America. I was two years old and the youngest of seven children. I thought of how I could have been such a burden on my parents.

This journey was not easy for my parents, but throughout they thought of their children first. I was even told that they once ate only apple peels, sparing the fruit part for me. This was special because at that time many children were abandoned by their parents. My parents' many sacrifices are admirable.

Our journey to America was not the last of our struggles. We were also faced with starting a life in America with nothing. My parents' firm determination to give their children a good life was what has taken us where we are today. Almost everything we had was bought at thrift shops, but we were happy because we knew we had a chance in America.

My parents worked very hard to build a better life. After a few years my parents bought a car and gradually they saved up enough money to buy a house, this was the true sign of our prosperity.

My parents' greatest achievement proves that nothing is impossible. To this day they are looked up to by people they have inspired. I greatly admire my parents and therefore I would like to give them a loving and heartfelt "thank you" for achieving their dream, the American dream.

Animals and plants need each other to survive. They keep the world of nature in balance. If a certain plant dies out some animals may become extinct, too, because they depend on the plant for food.

Long ago, most animals and plants became extinct because of natural events, like earthquakes or volcano eruptions. Climatic changes also led to the disappearance of certain species. Today, plants and animals are in danger mostly because of humans.

Some plants and animals can only live in certain areas. We call such a living place a habitat. If a habitat is destroyed the species cannot find any more food or a place to live, sleep or have babies. So it dies out.

Habitats can be destroyed in many ways. People need more space to live in. Therefore, they take away the natural home of plants and animals.

Pollution can also kill off certain species. Acid rain from factories can poison fish there.

Sometimes native animals become endangered when a new species appears. Foxes were brought to Australia to kill off rabbits, which were seen as a pest. But instead of killing rabbits, the foxes killed kangaroos and other animals.

People have hurt plants and animals but they are willing to help them survive. All over the world organizations like the World Wildlife Fund, the Rainforest Action Network and Friends of the Earth are helping to protect habitats. They raise money for their projects and make governments and the public aware of the problem. New laws have also been made to protect endangered plants and animals all over the world.

Why is it that dogs seem to be able to read our emotions? Whether we're happy or sad, our furry friends seem to be there, either wagging their tails or staring at us. Well, new research indicates that dogs can tell the difference between happy and angry human facial expressions.

However, whether or not they understand the emotions behind these faces is still up for debate. Researchers from the University of Vienna designed an experiment where eleven dogs were trained to associate either a happy or an angry face with a food reward. During this stage, each dog was shown only the upper half or lower half of the person's face.

In a later test, the scientists showed the dogs images, either of human faces they had not seen in their training, or of just half a human face. The dogs then had to, to the best of their ability, spot the difference.

Surprisingly, the dogs are able to tell the difference between the happy and angry face more often than not, suggesting that they can associate positive and negative feelings with a smile or a frown.

"Our study demonstrates that dogs can distinguish angry and happy expressions in humans. They can tell that these two expressions have different meanings, and they can do this not only for people they know well, but even for faces they have never seen before," Ludwig Huber, senior author and head of the group at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna's Messerli Research Institute, said in a press release.

This study isn't the first to test whether dogs could tell between human emotional expressions, but it is the first to provide evidence of what we have always suspected.

Huber and his colleagues believe their findings can be useful to pet owners when giving punishment or rewards, making sure not to let their faces give it away. But perhaps the message is to smile more, because you can't fool a dog.

61、From this passage, we can learn that dogs can ______.

A.hardly read human emotions

B.never read human emotions

C.tell the difference between happy and angry human facial expressions

Section B

Directions: In the section, you are required to read a passage and fill in each blank with no more than FIVE words on the ANSWER SHEET.

Internet use appears to cause a drop in psychological (心理上的) health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.

Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more bad feelings and loneliness than those who were online less frequently, the two-year study showed. Researchers are puzzled over the results, which are completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television,  since the Net allows users to choose their information and communicate with others.

The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in psychological health, researchers hypothesized (推测). Faceless, bodiless "virtual" (虚拟的) communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower (肤浅的,浅薄的). Another possibility is that exposure (暴露) to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.

"But it's important to remember this is not about the technology; it's about how it is used," says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study's sponsors (发起人). "It really points the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology."

66、The researchers found that Internet use may ______ in psychological health.

67、Researchers are puzzled over the results, which are ______ their expectations.

68、A.first, the researchers expected that the Net would prove ______ television.

69、Communication through Internet may be less ______ than actual conversation.
