Paper cutting is a special form of folk art in China, with a history of nearly 1,500 years. The first paper cutting dates hack to the Southern and Northern Dynasties period. The creation and spread of paper cutting have a close relationship with Chinese rural festivals.

In rural areas, paper cutting is traditionally a handicraft for women. In the past every native girl was supposed to master it and brides were often judged by their skills. However, professional paper cutting artists were usually males who earned incomes by working in workshops.

The main cutting tools are simple: paper and scissors (剪刀). It is easy to learn how to make paper cuttings but very difficult to master it with perfection. This is because making paper cuttings requires much effort, practice and imagination. Flexibility(灵活性) is also needed, but any hesitation or wiggling will lead to imperfection or even damage the whole image.

Paper cuttings are popular because of their expression of wishes and hopes. Wishes for wealth, health and longevity are mostly conveyed through paper cuttings. For example, during the Spring Festival, the character "Fu" is pasted upside down on the door to express people's wishes for good fortune; upon the birthday party of a senior, the character "Shou" is often seen and will add delight to the whole celebration.

It was late, about 10:15p.m. Janice went out of her office and started driving home.
