Part Ⅰ Reading Comprehension

Section A Passage Reading

Format Ⅰ

Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on The Answer Sheet.

To hear most recent researches tell it, coffee is a miracle drink. The magic beans will prevent skin cancer and Alzheimer's(老年痴呆症), reduce heart failure and diabetes(糖尿病) risk, heighten focus, and even protect liver health. The miracle drink even decreases suicide risk, according to the newest study that justifies our coffee addiction.

According to a study performed by the Harvard School of Public Health and published this month in The World Journal of Biological Psychiatry, people who drink two to four cups of coffee each day are less likely to commit suicide than those who don't drink coffee, drink decal, or drink fewer than two cups each day. The study followed over 200,000 people for at least 16 years. And it's not just a weak link: the researchers found that the suicide risk was cut by around 50 percent for coffee addicts.

This isn't the first time that researchers have discovered that coffee and smiles might go hand in hand. A 2011 study found that women who drink coffee cut their risk of depression by 15 percent compared to those who don't. Michel Lucas, the head researcher of the most recent study, told The Huffington Post that coffee addicts can thank caffeine for the good news. The drug may actually act like a mild anti-depression by adjusting levels of happy hormones.

Of course, there is plenty of research out there that doesn't look so kindly upon coffee drinkers. Recently, the New Yorker published an article arguing that while coffee may heighten focus, it also puts a squeeze on creativity. And of course, coffee's well-known negative effects like insomnia(失眠症) and disturbed sleep cycle still hold. Regardless, we'll raise our mugs to this most recent study for justifying our coffee addiction once again.

1、Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a possible benefit of drinking coffee? ______

Polar bears are classified as marine mammals(哺乳动物), like a seal or a whale, which might come as a surprise given that they're usually pictured on land. But polar bears spend a lot of their time in the waters of the Arctic(北极), fishing or swimming among the sea ice. They may look awkward in the water, but no creature with paws is a better swimmer.

They'd better be. Arctic sea ice is declining fast, robbing the polar bear of its prime habitat and forcing them to swim longer and longer distances to reach solid ground. No other animal seems to be such a direct victim of global warming, which is one reason why the polar bear has emerged as the symbol of climate change. (Another is that they look so cute and cuddly. ) It's a simple narrative to grasp: carbon warms the climate, Arctic sea ice melts and baby polar bears drown.

But it turns out it might not be that simple.  A new study by scientists at the United States Geological Survey(USGS) underscores the fact that polar bears really are amazing swimmers. In fact, they are so good that biologists were able to document 50 swimmers that covered an average length of 96 miles. The research provides clues that polar bears may be able to keep treading(踩) water even as climate change melts their habitat.

The researchers published their work in the Canadian Journal of Zoology. They followed 52 female polar bears in the Arctic Ocean north of Alaska from 2004 to 2009, using radio collars that could track the movements of the animals. They then compared the paths taken by the bears with maps of shifting sea ice over the same period time, and found that the polar bears were world-class marathon swimmers. And those long, long dips in the ocean weren't outliers—while the really long-distance swims were relatively rare, 38% of the bears surveyed took at least one such marathon swim.

6、People may feel surprised to know that polar bears are classified as marine mammals because ______.

A.polar bears cannot live in the sea

B.polar bears have paws and can walk

C.polar bears are usually seen on land

D.polar bears are rarely pictured by people

7、What does the writer mean by saying "no creature with paws is a better swimmer" in the first paragraph? ______

A.Polar bears are the best swimmers in the world.

B.Polar bears swim better than other animals with paws.

D.Creatures with paws can swim better than any fish.

8、The second paragraph is mainly about ______.

A.the danger the baby polar bears will face

B.the reason why polar bears are so popular

C.the cause of the climate change

D.the effects of global warming on polar bears

9、The underlined word "underscores" (Paragraph 3) is closest in meaning to "______".

A.emphasizes    B.denies

C.understands    D.accepts

10、What did the researchers use to track the movements of 52 female polar bears? ______

A.GPS.    B.Airlines.

C.Radio collars.    D.Maps of shifting sea ice.

How many hundreds of heroes go unheralded (未宣布的) from the days of the Underground Railroad? While we celebrate such important figures as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, numerous others were needed to make the operation of the "railroad" a success. Runaway slaves had to be given shelter from weather and from search parties. The tale of this awesome phenomenon is one of cooperation, coordination, and brotherly love.

The Underground Railroad operated as a secret organization dedicated to assisting runaway slaves from the South. The Railroad should not be thought of, however, as one cohesive body. It was in fact an ever-evolving organization devoted to one cause: protection of one's fellow men and women. It actually began during the colonial period. However, it reached its height in the decades preceding the American Civil War. Acts such as the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850(1850年逃奴追缉法案) increased railroad activity and popularity. The ultimate goal of the Underground Railroad was to accomplish the safe arrival of runaway slaves to Canada where the long arm of the law could not reach them. Laws such as the Fugitive Slave Acts of 1793 and 1850 allowed slave owners to recapture escaped slaves and bring them back to bondage in the South.

Some historians believe this courageous organization was began by Quakers (贵格会教徒) in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Over time, the backbone of this organization became the numerous free blacks of the North. They were essential to the successful operation of the Underground Railroad. In most cases, fleeing slaves traveled by any means necessary and often on their own in an effort to reach freedom in the North. After arriving in the North, the people of the Underground Railroad would provide assistance and supplies in an effort to get them to the guaranteed freedom of Canada.

11、Which of the following statements about the Underground Railroad is true? ______

A.It was a railroad built underground like subway.

B.It was a railroad operated by the US government.

C.It operated as a secret organization to help runaway slaves.

D.It served as a secret route only known to slaves' owners in the South.

12、From Paragraph 2, we know that the runaway slaves ______.

A.could not afford to buy their train tickets

B.could be recaptured by slaves' owners

C.could not get any shelter from bad weather

D.might reach Canada with the help of search parties

13、The Underground Railroad began ______.

A.during the American Civil War    B.after the Declaration of Independence

C.during the colonial period    D.between 1793 and 1850

14、Who were essential to the successful operation of the Underground Railroad? ______

A.Slaves in the South.    B.Quakers in Canada.

C.White people of the South.    D.Free blacks of the North.

15、The tone of the passage can be described as ______.

A.objective    B.delightful

C.pessimistic    D.humorous

We are in the midst of a public debate over the benefits of online education. Yet while journalists and educators weigh in on the pros and cons of online courses, I've seen no mention of how online classes lead to an increase in academic dishonesty. This past semester, I caught quite a few of my students at Gal State Northridge engaging in academic dishonesty.

I think that the incidents of cheating have increased for two interconnecting reasons. The first is the trend of packing as many students as possible into course sections as a means of saving money. The second is the structure of the online courses themselves. It is evident that these two intertwining(缠结) trends can serve to produce academic cheating and plagiarism(剽窃).

In the wake of the Great Recession and the following budget crisis, the dean of one of the colleges I teach in increased class sizes by as many as 50 students in an attempt to save money. One of the non-online courses I teach was intended for 32 to 35 pupils. But when I taught the course last semester, it was composed of 82 students.

Online courses serve to exacerbate(加剧) the trend toward larger class sizes. The primary motive for the increase in online courses is that they do not require physical classroom space. This allows campus administrators to cut costs by increasing the number of students enrolled in a particular course section even if they don't have classrooms.

What's more, when students take classes online, the professor does not have face-to-face contact with the majority of the students enrolled in the course. As a result, one can never be sure that the students are doing their own work for there is little to stop them from paying another student to take their exams for them.

It is evident that both increased class sizes without any accompanying teaching assistance, and the structure of online courses by themselves make it easier for students to cheat. This not only cheapens the college degree but also makes the whole purpose of a college education meaningless.

16、The writer of this passage is most probably a ______.

A.student    B.journalist

C.campus administrator    D.professor

17、In the writer's opinion, one reason for the increase in academic dishonesty is that ______.

A.students want to save money

B.class sizes are too large

C.classrooms are very small

D.dishonest students are not punished

18、The primary motive for the increase in online courses is that ______.

A.they are new and modern

B.they can improve the education quality

C.they do not need physical classroom space

D.they are convenient for both students and teachers

19、One form of the academic dishonesty mentioned in the passage is that ______.

A.students copy term papers without being noticed

B.students don't do any homework

C.students don't attend classes regularly

D.students can ask someone else to take the exam

20、The writer's attitude toward online education is ______.

A.negative    B.friendly

C.neutral    D.supportive

Section B Short Answer Questions

Directions: In this part there is a short passage followed by five questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements with no more than 10 words. Please write your answers on The Answer Sheet.

Is there anything more harmless than a turtle? (Unless, I suppose, you're a nice, leafy vegetable. ) Turtles and tortoises—the main difference is that turtles dwell at least partially in water, while tortoises live exclusively on land—are slow-moving, peaceful animals whose main form of protection from the outside world is a hard shell. Not for nothing do we have the fable of the slow and steady tortoise winning the race. Turtles have existed in the form for more than 220 million years, outlasting their early contemporaries the dinosaurs(恐龙). Long-lived turtles and tortoises are symbols of perseverance in the natural world.

Unfortunately, the rules of the race are changing. Turtles and tortoises are among the world's most endangered vertebrates(脊椎动物). Also primates(灵长目动物)—human beings excepted—are at greater risk of being wiped off the planet. There are many threats. The animals are collected by traders, eaten in the wild and in fine restaurants, used as pets or for traditional medicine, and sometimes simply killed. The very adaptation that once made them so successful—their long adult life span and delayed sexual maturity—has made them vulnerable as the world around them changes, mostly thanks to human beings.

A 2011 report from the Turtle Conservation Coalition makes it clear: we need to act now if we're to save the turtles and the tortoises.

We are facing a turtle survival crisis unprecedented in its severity and risk. Humans are the problem, and must therefore also be the solution. Without concerted conservation action, many of the world's turtles and tortoises will become extinct within the next few decades. It is now up to us to prevent the loss of these remarkable, unique jewels of evolution.

56、The main difference between turtles and tortoises is that the former can sometimes live in water while the latter only live ______.

57、For turtles and tortoises, their main form of protection from the outside world is ______.

58、Long-lived turtles and tortoises are symbols of ______.

59、One of the threats turtles and tortoises face is that they can be used for traditional ______.

60、According to the passage, who is to blame for the turtle survival crisis?

Section B English-Chinese Translation

Directions: Translate into Chinese the underlined sentences in the following passage. Please write your translation on The Answer Sheet.

66   I heard a shocking conversation between two diners in a restaurant the other day. One lady was deciding whether or not she should have a green salad, fresh fruit or fries as the side dish with her meal.  67   Her friend said, "Don't get the fruit, or it will make you fat." "Fruit makes me fat?" she asked. "It has tons of calories," replied the friend. The lady ordered fries with her meal.

Can fruit make you fat? My favorite quote about fruit comes from Steven Kates, the personal trainer and founder of one of my favorite weight-loss products "Lifesize Portions". In the instructional video of Lifesize he talks to a client who is astounded that she can eat an unlimited number of bananas on the Lifesize Portions program.  68   "No one gets fat from eating bananas," he says.

He's right.  69   Of course, the woman in the first conversation is right too. Some fruits are higher in calories. And for dieters with diabetes, the sugar in fruit may limit the amount they should eat.  70   But for the average person who wants to eat a healthy diet, fruit is a good thing! You can overeat any food, but really, when's the last time that you heard of someone overeating the kiwi?
