Scientists are developing a new kind of machine to take the place of humans. These machines can do jobs in places that are too  21   for humans. For example, they are being developed to work in nuclear power centers, deep under the oceans and in  22   space.

John Marrit, a psychologist (心理学家) in Williamsburg Massachusetts, helped develop the new machine. This is  23   they work. A machine is placed in an area far away from the person who operates it. The person wears a  24   hard hat with television screens and sound equipment. The screens and sound equipment let the person see and hear  25   what the machine is seeing and hearing. Mr. Marrit says this gives the person the feeling of  26   in the same place as the machine. The idea, he says, is being there without going there.

The person uses an  27  . device to make the machine move. The machine copies the person's movements  28   precision. If the person raises his right arm, the machine raises the right arm, too. This means an expert can do a dangerous job while staying in the safe place.

The new machines are not exactly like robots. Robots are controlled comprehensively by  29   computers. In other words, robots are completely computerized. These new machines,  30   are controlled directly by their human operators.

Ⅲ.Reading Comprehension

Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course, there have always been people who have looked for adventures (冒险) and those who have climbed the highest mountains or explored unknown parts of the world. Now, however, there are people who look for a quick pleasure from a dangerous activity, which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.

I think bungee jumping is a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place (maybe a bridge or a hot-air balloon) 200 meters above the ground with an elastic rope (弹力绳) tied to your ankles (踝). You fall at up to 150 kilometers an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Most people think that other activities, such as jumping from the tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high rocks are as dangerous as bungee jumping.

Why do people take part in such activities? Some scientists think it is because life in modem societies has become safe and boring. Now life has little excitement. They buy food in shops and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they are ill. The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping.

Dogs are social animals and without proper training, they will behave like wild animals. They will spoil your house, destroy your belongings, bark excessively (过分地), fight other dogs and even bite you. Nearly all behavior problems are perfectly normal dog activities that occur at the wrong time or place or are directed at the wrong thing. The key to preventing or treating behavior problems is learning to teach the dog to redirect its normal behavior to outlets that are acceptable in the domestic setting.

One of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself is to train its obedience. Obedience training doesn't solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem. Training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want it to do.

Training is also an easy way to establish the social rank order. When your dog obeys a simple request of "come here, and sit", it is showing obedience and respect for you. It is not necessary to establish yourself as top dog or leader of the dog pack (群) by using extreme measures. You can teach your dog its subordinate (从属的) role by teaching it to show submission (服从) to you. Most dogs love performing tricks for you to pleasantly accept that you are in charge. Training should be fun and rewarding for you and your dog. It can enrich your relationship and make living together more enjoyable. A well-trained dog is more confident and can more safely be allowed a greater amount of freedom than an untrained animal.

Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or sleep restfully. It is a problem to nearly everyone at some time. A person may be awake for an hour in the middle of the night and then, next morning, feel that he hardly sleeps all night. Normally, worry about not getting enough sleep is the worst aspect of most insomnia. If insomnia happens again and again, however, it is important to find its causes and try to correct them with the help of a doctor if necessary.

Any of a large number of simple factors may make it difficult for someone to fall asleep or remain asleep. His mattress (床垫) maybe too soft or too hard. If there are too many blankets on a hot night, he may be too warm; if the bedclothes are too light, he may feel cold during the night. If it is not dark enough or too noisy, this may cause difficulty in sleeping. Eating shortly before going to bed also be responsible for insomnia. Stimulating drinks, such as tea or coffee, can also keep people awake.

Inability to fall asleep is sometimes a symptom (症状) of emotional or mental disorders. Insomnia may also be caused by pain and very rarely, it can be a symptom of a physical disease.

The cause of insomnia may be easy to correct. The sufferer should check the mattress, bedclothes and bedroom temperature, and make any necessary changes. An eye mask keeps out the light and ear-plugs shut out sound. He should relax for an hour or two before bedtime, perhaps by reading a book; watching TV or taking a warm bath. If he wakes during the night he should try tuning on the light and reading for a while. Taking warm milk and a biscuit or two may be helpful. Above all, he should try not to worry about sleeplessness. When someone is tired enough he nearly always falls asleep.
