Part Ⅰ Reading Comprehension

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and then mark the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET.

Passage One

There have been many great inventions, things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today—the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances.

For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800's the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn't have to explore much anymore. They began to work instead to make life better.

In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today. The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter in 1909. Movies with sound in 1926. The computer in 1928. And jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wore.

By this time most people had a very good life. Man had a desire to explore again. The world was known to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space. In 1969 man took his biggest step from the earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning. New inventions will someday allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.

Passage Two

There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, vastly different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is how to encourage a child to express himself freely and confidently in writing without holding him back with the complexities of spelling.

If spelling becomes the only focal point of his teacher's interest, clearly a clever child will be likely to "play safe". He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language. That's why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.

I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: "This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is illegible." It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil's technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child's deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centered on the child's ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation to seek improvement.

6、 Teachers are different in their opinions about ______.

A. the difficulties in teaching spelling

B. the necessity of teaching spelling

C. the complexities of the basic writing skills

D. the role of spelling in general language development

7、 The expression "play safe" probably means "______".

A. to write carefully

B. to avoid using words one is not sure of

C. to do as teachers say

D. to use dictionaries frequently

8、 Teachers encourage the use of dictionaries so that ______.

A. teachers will have less trouble in correcting mistakes

B. students will have more confidence in writing

C. students will be able to express their ideas more freely

D. students will learn to be independent of teachers

9、 The major point discussed in the passage is ______.

A. the relationship between spelling and content of a composition

B. the importance of developing writing skills

C. the correct way of marking compositions

D. the complexities of spelling

10、 The author seems to think that the teacher's judgment on that sensitive piece of writing is ______.

A. unfair                                B. reasonable

C. foolish                              D. careless

Liu Qing, a young employee in Beijing who said she was planning to start a side job, warned that some young people think the standards for establishing a side business are low—they start casually, doing whatever job they want, even if it may not be suitable for them. "I think that if you want to be successful in your side job, you must do effective market research and understand how your skill set fits in the market," she said.

"Some young people choose side jobs out of proactive consideration," Wang Ting, a professor of China University of Political Science and Law, told China Youth Daily. Passage Four

Online meetings may affect creativity, study finds. Many companies have moved online because of COVID-19, with work meetings around the world taking place on the Internet instead of in the office. But a recent study has found that online meetings may affect creative thinking.

The study, published in Nature, included 602 people who were divided into random pairs. Each pair was given five minutes to think of creative uses for one certain item, and then one minute to choose the most creative idea. Some pairs were asked to work together on a video call, while others worked in person. The results showed that the in-person pairs had more ideas than the virtual pairs.

Some researches were also done to see whether focusing on a screen could affect a person's creativity. Teams working together virtually spent more time looking directly at each other and remembered lots of their surroundings when asked later. The in-person pairs spent more time looking around the room but also had more ideas.

The researchers did the same study with 1,490 engineers. The pairs were asked to think of new product ideas and choose one as an idea for their company. The results were similar to the first study, with the engineers who met in person thinking of more product ideas, and the virtual pairs making slightly better decisions about which idea to choose.

The results suggest that businesses should think carefully about which tasks can be done online, and which—like thinking of new ideas—should be done in person.

A. airline          B. online            C. underline         D. outline

A. 602.          B. 1,490.          C. 745.            D. 301.

18、 What does the phrase "in person" in the passage mean? ______

A. Going somewhere and doing something oneself.

B. Communicating by email.

C. Asking someone else for help.

D. Experiencing something different.

19、 According to the last paragraph, the study results suggested that ______.

A. if a company wants to get more creative ideas, online meetings should be held

B. all tasks can be done online

C. if a company wants to get more creative ideas, in-person meetings should be held

D. businesses should pay less attention to which tasks can be done online

20、 Which of the following statements is NOT true? ______

A. The study published in Nature showed that online meetings might affect creativity.

B. The study with engineers showed that the virtual pairs made slightly better decisions about which idea to choose.

Idioms are one of the characteristics of traditional Chinese culture. They have a fixed structure and a fixed statement, indicating certain meaning. They are ready-made sayings, similar to proverbs, but slightly different. Most idioms are derived from ancient Chinese literary works and are usually related to some myths, legends or historical events. They, which represent stories or allusions, are often different from modern Chinese in terms of word use. Chinese idioms are a unique way of expression in Chinese, mostly composed of four characters. The meaning of an idiom is often implied in its literal meaning, not a simple addition of its constituent meanings. It has a tight structure and we can not change the word order or increase or decrease the components.

①So idioms are widely used in daily conversation and literary creation. ②It is difficult to understand the exact meaning of an idiom without knowledge of its origin. ③Although highly concise and fixed in form, they usually can convey profound meaning vividly. ④Therefore, learning idioms helps people better understand traditional Chinese culture. ⑤Proper use of idioms can make one's language more expressive and communication more effective.
